  • It was in the summer of 2010 that I first came an online advertisement about The War and Peace Annual Show. Having grown up in the Middle East, an area not short of war and certainly lacking in the other, I was intrigued. So off I set to the quiet and picturesque Tonbridge, Kent. Where hundreds had gathered to participate in what is probably the biggest show of it's kind in Europe. The War and Peace Show attracts hundreds of WW2 enthusiasts, re-enactors and veterans as well as WW2 motor vehicle and memorabilia collectors. The photographs presented here are from a series of images taken over the last 4 years while attending this annual show and other similar events in the South of England. Participation of re-enactors in these events focuses on one of two different aspects of the lives of the soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen that were involved in the conflict. The first, known as living history, emphasises the Garrison life of the average serviceman. The other involves simulated combat between the Allied forces and The Axis. The events are open to all ages and they attract thousands of spectators every year. The look of the encampment area was very convincing and I had the feeling of stumbling upon a film set. After a few minutes of entering the event I started noticing to my surprise, how much the event was family orientated. Exhibitors and re-enactors were accompanied by their respective partners and children and had even got them involved in the activities. My views and feelings towards war and weapons have always been slightly ambivalent. By approaching the subject in a humouristic way it has allowed me to deal with the subject in a "safe" manner as I have never had the urge or bravery to go to a real place of conflict . I hope that this work manages to communicate the absurdity of it all. I intend to continue photographing similar events in the future and hope to be able to exhibit this series sometime soon.
